Knyga „Neramūs keliautojai”

Spalio 30 d. VDU Menų galerijoje 101 (Muitinės g. 7, Kaunas) atidaryta Romualdo Požerskio fotografijų paroda Neramūs keliautojai ir pristatyta T. Pabedinsko sudaryta to paties pavadinimo knyga.

On the 30th of October Romualdas Požerskis’ photo exhibition “Restless Riders” was opened and the new book of the same title edited by T. Pabedinskas was presented at VMU Art gallery 101 (Muitinės st. 7, Kaunas).

In the early 1970s, just a few years before he became one of Lithuania’s most renowned photographers, Romualdas Požerskis was still a student at the Kaunas Technical Institute, devoting his youth in the company of a small group of like-minded friends to the ideals represented by motorcycles, travel, and freedom. From 1971 to 1975, Požerskis, his classmate Virgis Lankas, his cousin Petras Pocius, and Zenonas Langaitis rode across Lithuania on their motorcycles, sometimes venturing even further – to Tallinn, Estonia. At the time, none of these young riders associated themselves with any greater biker movement or with the hippie community then thriving in Kaunas. Still, traveling, freedom, and their sometimes romantic and dramatic experiences on the road, were inevitably linked to the alternative culture of the West and its rebellious spirit. Romualdas and his friends listened to The Doors, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath. They read Jack Kerouac, made their own biker jackets with fringed sleeves and bell-bottom jeans and dreamed of a free Lithuania without political or ideological restrictions, without limitations on personal liberty.

The photographs presented in the exhibition and the new book look today like a metaphor for the life and ideals of a young generation and the political situation they endured in their day. They begin the story of the aspiration for personal and political freedom in the Soviet era at the start of the turbulent 1970s. Such an interpretation of this photographs today is born from the perspective of time, from an understanding of the historical context of the given era, from the “transfer” of such a photo from a personal album to this book and, in the end, because of the propensity of photography to transform a given moment of daily life into a reflection of more universal significance. And yet, the exhibition gives a rare opportunity to brush off, one by one, the layers of interpretation and generalization that can obscure this and other photographs, so that we might feel, almost directly, the “living” experience of the moment captured and unconstrained from an aesthetic perspective in these images – photographs that, at the time, were intended solely for the personal enjoyment of their subjects. Intimate relation with the period captured in the photographs is also enhanced by R. Požerskis’ youth diary, amateur film footage and his companions’ personal photoalbums – all of which are presented at the exhibition.

The exhibition is opened from the 30th of October till the 21st of November.
