Paroda Vilniaus fotografijos galerijoje

Vilniaus fotografijos galerijoje (Stiklių g. 4, Vilnius) 2022 m. vasario 9 d. – kovo 12 d. veikė Tomo Pabedinsko personalinė paroda „Spektaklio vienišiai“.

2007 m. atidarytas prekybos centras „Akropolis“ tapo didžiausiu prekybos centru Kaune.

An exhibition by Tomas Pabedinskas, The Loners of the Spectacle, opened at the Vilnius Photography Gallery (Stiklių g. 4, Vilnius) on January 9, 2022. It was open until March 12, 2022.

When the Akropolis opened in 2007, it was the largest shopping centre in Kaunas, Lithuania. It also very quickly appeared to become the most fashionable place in the city not only for shopping but also for parading, looking for romantic relationships and striving for a “fancier” lifestyle. All of these aspirations and social activities relocated themselves from the streets of the city centre to the passages of the shopping mall. This “society of the spectacle” gained an almost idealized form in the shopping centre’s illuminated spaces, separated from the imperfect world outside. However, the boredom and weariness of the participants of the “spectacle” and a longing for the unfulfilled dreams and secrets behind the visible surface were also revealed even more clearly there.

Tomas Pabedinskas observed the changing habits of the city’s residents between 2011 and 2016. Following the traditions of American street and road photography he sought to capture the in-between moments of uncertainty, when the mall’s visitors or staff lost touch with the provided scripts of consumption and when feelings of loneliness revealed themselves in this artificial setting of entertainment. In the photographs, such moments become the generalized image of the spectacle, in which not society but isolated loners exist.
